Ha Long Bay is renowned for its unique limestone islands and the sparkling stalactites within its caves. Alongside its natural beauty, the region is steeped in local legends. Among these is the legend of the Virgin Cave (Hang Trinh Nữ) and the Drum Cave (Hang Trống), along with other remarkable sites such as Sung Sot Cave, Dong Tien Lake, and Luon Cave. Located about 15 kilometers south of Bai Chay/ Tuan Chau International Passenger Port, these caves are integral parts of Ha Long Bay’s cultural and natural heritage.
Hang Trống (Drum Cave) is situated on the Bo Hon archipelago, part of the sightseeing route 2 in Halong Bay. According to local fishermen, the cave gets its name from the sound of wind passing through its crevices, which reverberates off the cave walls, creating a drum-like effect.
Covering an area of about 300 square meters, Hang Trống features a spacious interior with two arched entrances roughly 60 meters apart. It is one of the archaeological sites of the Soi Nhu culture, dating back between 18,000 and 7,000 years.
Visitors to Hang Trống can admire the cave’s grand arches and impressive stalactites. The unique sound of wind echoing through the cave adds to its allure, producing a drum-like resonance that fascinates visitors.
Hang Trống is a natural masterpiece of Halong Bay’s World Heritage Site. From inside the cave, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding natural landscape, making it a memorable experience.
Legend: The legend associated with these caves tells of a beautiful, impoverished girl who was forced into servitude by a wealthy landowner. Despite her pleas, he sought to marry her, but she refused, as she was already betrothed. The landowner exiled her to a desolate island to break her spirit. During a stormy night, she turned to stone in the cave now known as Hang Trinh Nữ (Virgin Cave).
The legend also speaks of her betrothed, who, upon learning of her plight, searched desperately for her. His boat was wrecked by a storm, and he ended up on the same island. Seeing her in the distance, he tried to call out, but his cries were lost to the wind. He struck the cave walls with a rock to signal her, but ultimately, he too turned to stone, becoming the Drum Cave.
Hang Trinh Nữ (Virgin Cave) and Hang Trống (Drum cave) are more than just natural wonders; they hold significant cultural and emotional resonance. The Virgin Cave contains a rock formation resembling a girl with flowing hair reaching towards the sea, while the Drum Cave features a towering stalagmite resembling a giant man facing the Virgin Cave. The sounds of the storm and the echoes of the past still linger in these enchanting caves.
